Zoe's homecoming

As of Friday morning, October 23rd, Zoe is HOME!!!!

Here's an update from Zoe's mom:

I was feeling pretty down this morning wondering if it was going to be another let down day like Wednesday was [when there were no sighting calls]. This week has been a rollercoaster of emotions for me. I was physically tired and emotionally drained. I hadn't cried this much in a long time.

As I was sitting there IM'ing with my daugheters about Zoe and our plans for the day, I received a phone call from a lady named Debbie. She asked if I was the person who owned the dog on the flyer. I said that I was. She told me that she had just seen Zoe by the woods at West Springfield High School. I asked how long ago that was. She stated that she had to find a phone since she didn't have a cell phone with her so she said she guessed it was a couple minutes. She was still out of breath from running to get to a phone.

She also asked if Zoe was "a little plump." I knew right then and there that this was definitely Zoe. As we more mature women know, we do tend to get just a little more middle as we pass into the wonder years. I IM'd Rikki and told her to send out the alert and dashed out the door. I wasn't going to waste any more time since it seemed that for the entire week I was always just 5 minutes too late.

Of course, I found the brother to the slow lady I was trapped behind yesterday. I honestly think they have an entire clan of those people who watch to see when I leave my house and plan their departure accordingly. I pushed his car up the road until I was able to turn off at the high school.

As I pulled in I saw a female coach and about six high school girls coming from the woods next to the school and starting to enter the school. I asked them if they had seen a black and white Aussie. The coach asked if I was the owner of the dog. I replied yes.

She looked at me for a second or two and then said, "yes, we've seen your dog." I immediately asked where she last saw Zoe. She says, "in my bathroom."

So in my calm and cool manner I scream "Oh My God, Oh My God....where can I park my car?" She told me to just pull it behind any of the cars parked there. I did so and jump out of the car. Unfortunately, in my haste I didn't put the car in park. Luckily, it only went a inch or two. I jump out again and then immediately realized that I had left the keys in the ignition with the car running. Once again, back in the driver's seat I turn off the car and try to calmly get out of the car with leash.

As we were walking through the girls locker room to the coach's office, she told me that they had seen Zoe stuck in a bunch of briars and together she and her six or so girls sports team (Lord, I wish I had the state of mine to ask what sport) worked to free her and bring her into the school.

As she unlocked the door to her office, she looked at me with these kind eyes and said, "I sure hope this is your dog." I looked around and saw that the girls were a little apprehensive. I guess my eyes welling up with tears and me hopping around like I had to pee had them a little tense.

As soon as she opened the bathroom door I saw my precious little Zo-doggy. I kneeled down to her eye level and she started kissing my face. I burst out into full fledge crying now. When I stood up, I saw that the coach and all of the girls were crying with joy along with me.

As they were walking me out to my car and I was saying my one hundredth thank you, the coach said, "just how did you know we had the dog?" I looked at her kind of stunned and said, "you weren't the person who called me? Your name isn't Debbie?" She replied in the negative.

Just as she said that Debbie walked into the parking lot. All of the stars and planets had fallen into place. At the right time and at the right place. If Zoe hadn't of wandered into the high school where a team of girls worked as a team to get her and someone else had called me immediately upon seeing her, I don't know if she would have been returned to me.

We'd like to take this opportunity to thank you all the folks who helped with bring Zoe home: the folks who flyered and made phone calls, the people who donated online, the folks who crossposted info about Zoe, those who checked feeding stations and offered advice, everyone who called in sightings and then responded to the sighting calls, and the wonderful people who finally coralled Zoe!

Hot Sighting Thursday Afternoon!

Debbie recieved a call close to 1pm today; Zoe had just been seen by a couple of different people in a neighborhood very close as the crow flies to home! Debbie dashed out to the site, and arrived no more than five minutes after the second sighter saw Zoe.

As I'm writing this, Debbie is still walking the area, and several family members, friends, volunteers and the sighters are there assisting. Check back for details!

Fingers and paws crossed for a good outcome!!!!

Sightings!

Efforts are well under way to find Zoe! Some good fliering has gotten its start (more needed, of course!) so check the map to see where. Then if you are able to flier, you can see what areas don't need to be covered because they already were fliered.

And we are very encouraged by sightings that have started to come in, which have been the results of Craigslist and fliering as well as canvassing while both fliering & checking out existing sightings. Earlier this evening, Debbie (Zoe's mom) described the sightings that had come in this way:

- According to a voice mail this evening, one of my neighbors spotted Zoe around Forrester Blvd near the townhouse and condos either Sunday evening or Monday. She doesn't remember which. She only remembers that is was drizzling out. I wasn't able to get any further information since she didn't leave her name or phone number. She called me because of the flyers we left in all of our immediate neighbors mailboxes. She stated that she was pretty sure it was Zoe because it looked just like a "most black sheep dog."

- We received an e-mail in from the Craig's List posting stating that Zoe had been seen in the office complex on Traford Lane behind the Cardinal Forest Shopping Center. The shopping center is at the intersection of Old Keene Mill and Rolling Road. She feeds a feral cat in the area twice a day. Zoe would not come to her and was very scared. When Cyndie tried to approach Zoe she ran along the fenceline of the church next to the office complex and toward Carrleigh Parkway. Cyndie wasn't able to determine which way Zoe went. When I spoke to some construction workers across the street from the church, they stated that they didn't see a dog come by. Cyndie is positive that it was Zoe from the photos we have posted.

- While canvassing the area we spoke to Eleanor at the church next to Embassy Car Wash on Rolling Road. She stated that she saw a black dog with a white face run across Old Keene Mill Road from the Shell Station to the 7-11. She stated that this was while she was driving her son to school this morning.

- While canvassing the area, Gina (Debbie's daughter) spoke to some young gentlemen walking in the area. They stated that they saw Zoe cross the street from the Wachovia Bank. This is at the same Old Keene Mill Road and Rolling Road intersection.

- I received two more calls later in the evening. Both of the sightings were for Monday evening near the corner of Forrester Blvd and Rolling Road. This is in the same area. One of the ladies who called in even volunteered to help me put up posters in her area this morning. (This was added from an email from Debbie early Wednesday morning. Also see the Comments for another sighting!)

And then just now (after 11pm Tuesday), volunteer Nadene provided this report after having gone to the sighting areas after work: We talked with many people and we spent about 5 hours out there tonight. She has been seen all day long in that area so it is important to continue to flyer in the area. While we were out, Terri was approached by a man who had just seen her! We were quickly met by Gina but we were unable to locate her; we were inches away!

We're anxious to see what tomorrow brings!

Gone Missing

Sunday, October 18, 2009, at 4 a.m. Zoe escaped from the back yard. Someone left the gate unlocked and the wind blew it open. I saw the motion light come on and looked outside. I saw my yellow Lab Annie standing at the front door. I immediately brought her inside. I ran to get my shoes and went outside to find Zoe. I have not found her yet.

Zoe is a 9 year old, female, tri color, Australian Shepherd. She has on a leather collar with her rabies and Fairfax County tax tags. She will have no problem with children approaching her since she loves kids. She may shy away from adults.

If you see Zoe, please call me at 703-569-9678.

Here are a couple of photos of Zoe.
